When veneers are placed, the tooth is usually shaved down slightly — the amount depends on the material, bite alignment, and how crooked or protruded the teeth are.
On average:
  • Composite veneers → about 0.2–0.5 mm
  • Porcelain veneers → about 0.3–0.7 mm
  • In some cases, “no-prep” veneers are possible with little to no shaving, but they are not suitable for everyone.
For comparison:
0.5 mm is roughly the thickness of a bank card.
But here’s the important part many clinics avoid mentioning in marketing.
If the patient has:
  • severely crooked teeth,
  • protruding teeth,
  • dark discoloration,
  • large teeth,
  • or wants an extremely white “Hollywood smile,”

then more reduction may be necessary, sometimes approaching the level of a crown preparation. That’s where the line between conservative cosmetic work and aggressive shaving starts to matter.
A good dentist tries to:
  • preserve as much enamel as possible,
  • avoid going deep into dentin,
  • avoid unnecessary root canal treatment,
  • and design the smile naturally to fit the patient’s face instead of creating an artificial oversized look.
If a clinic says:
“We never shave teeth at all,” — that is often marketing.
If they say:
“We shave teeth down to small pegs” for regular veneers — that can be a red flag.
  • Patients today are much more informed and many are afraid of excessive tooth reduction — and honestly, they should be careful, because enamel does not grow back.
